Justine feels as though someone’s hands are covering her ears as she runs down the silver stairs from Anna’s quarters to meet Adam. Once she sees him, standing in a patch of mottled green tundra, she realizes that they were her hands, and that she has been shouting, “No, no, no, no”. She feels her body propelled toward him, her legs running like a doe runs in a meadow from a predator. When she reaches the space that barely separates she grabs him, embraces him, and he shakily reciprocates.
