The only time I lose the art is when I try to make publication the purpose. This is why I can’t study it the way many do. I’d rather learn about foot binding, and corsets, and the barbaric ways we used to try and cure the mentally ill. I’d rather learn about a cache of Buddhas, found deep inside the earth, made of stone, ivory, ceramic and metal. Archaeologists pulled up the earth and rock and found them beneath the surface, smiling up sedately, as if to say, “Oh good, you’re here.”

  1. I wish I had not studied it. Hopefully what I learned will fade away and I will revert to my lifelong habits of studying the world the way you describe studying it.

  2. I’m continually learning to follow my base instincts, to say ‘ah’ instead of an expletive.

What did you learn that you’re unhappy about? I’m curious…
